Mentoring
One of the ways students engage with youth in the Richmond community is through mentoring.
According to MENTOR Virginia:
"Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support, and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee."
The most common form of mentoring is the traditional one-on-one form of mentoring. Many college students also participate in team mentoring, a form of mentoring that connects a team of mentors with a small group of students. While the strength in traditional mentoring is in the personal connection, the strength of team mentoring is in the opportunity for the leaders to model healthy friendships and develop a positive culture within the group.
The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) supports many ways to accomplish the core goal of mentoring—namely, fostering healthy, encouraging relationships.
