Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia

Capitol Grounds

Richmond is the heart of state government. The Virginia State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and houses the oldest elected legislative body in North America. The Capitol building is open for free Guided Tours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Capitol Square is a public park surrounding the Capitol building. It features several monuments including the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial, the Virginia Women's Monument, and more.

City Hall

Richmond City Hall is the seat of city government and contains some of the best views of the city from its Observation Deck on the top floor, publicly accessible and free of charge.

Institute for Contemporary Art

The ICA at Virginia Commonwealth University presents the art of our time and provides an open forum for dialogue and collaboration across the region and throughout the world. It showcases an ever-changing slate of exhibitions, performances, films, and special programs. Admission is free and open to all.

James River Parks 

The James River Parks System is a 600-acre urban oasis that features rocks, rapids, meadows, forests, and an abundance of plant and animal life. It is a system of parks along both sides of the James River and includes Class IV white water rapids.

Library of Virginia

The Library of Virginia serves as the archival agency and the reference library for Virginia's seat of government. The Library's Exhibition Gallery is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The Library's reading rooms are also open to the public.

Maggie L. Walker National Historical Site

600 N 2nd St., Richmond, VA 23219

Maggie Lena Walker was the first woman and first African American woman to charter a bank and first president of a bank. She also devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. Ranger-guided tours of Maggie L. Walker's home are offered for free Tuesday through Saturday.

Science Museum of Virginia

The Science Museum of Virginia features hands-on exhibitions about wellness, innovation, and physical sciences. Four lab spaces - eco, animal, science, and art - let guests interact with science in unexpected ways. The Science Museums also hosts thought-provoking touring exhibitions from around the world. The Valentine

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

The VMFA is an art museum with more than 5,000 years of art from around the world. It is open 365 days of the year and general admission is always free. At the VMFA you will find special exhibitions, collections that span the globe and the history of creative achievement, two restaurants, a shop, and a public park that includes numerous sculptures including Kehinde Wiley's 'Rumors of War'.
