Senior Holly Wemple gains invaluable experience at Crossover Healthcare Ministry

For the past two years, Holly Wemple, a senior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology with a minor in health studies, has volunteered at Crossover Healthcare Ministry, work that has transformed her understanding of healthcare.

"Crossover works to provide healthcare to those who are either uninsured or underinsured," she said. "We also help patients access Medicaid and other resources."

Wemple's role as a nursing aide includes patient intake, conducting health assessments, and assisting with lab work.

"I’ve never worked at a place that feels so uplifting," she said. "If you can give three or four hours of your time, they’re so happy to have you there and really want you to learn. It’s the people who make the experience."

Wemple first learned about Crossover through friends in the University of Richmond Emergency Medical Services.

"It started as word of mouth," she recalled. "Some older students told me about their great experiences and that inspired me to get involved."

Now, as a peer mentor for the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, Wemple helps other students connect with similar opportunities.

"If someone wants to volunteer in healthcare, I’m here to share my experience and help them get started," she said.

Wemple highlighted the clinic’s broad scope of services which includes dentistry, primary care, and mental health, in addition to OB/GYN care.

"Crossover isn’t just about treating patients," she said. "It’s about ensuring they have access to the resources they need to continue their care."

While she aims to attend medical school, she is considering a gap year to further explore public health and other related research opportunities.

"This experience has opened my eyes to additional opportunities in healthcare," she said. "Even though OB isn’t my ultimate goal, the skills I’ve learned are transferable and invaluable."

Wemple encourages students from all backgrounds to consider volunteering at Crossover.

"There are roles for everyone, whether you’re scribing, translating, or assisting administratively," she said. "It’s a chance to make a meaningful impact while gaining experience."
