Safety Awareness
A good citizen takes responsibility for their own well-being and considers the safety and needs of others. When you are off campus, whether for a volunteer or engagement activity, an errand, or to enjoy Richmond, please remember that you are representing the University as well as yourself as an individual. Keep these tips in mind:
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
- When possible, travel in groups of two or more.
- Park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
- Lock your vehicle and do not leave valuables in view.
- After dark, ask someone to escort you to and from your vehicle if you are alone.
- Have the keys to your vehicle in hand before you leave the building.
- Be careful with your personal information (i.e., address, e-mail, phone number, and social security number).
- If you have safety concerns regarding a site where you are volunteering, please discuss these with a member of the CCE staff and/or with your professor immediately.
- You can search for recent crime activity in the neighborhood you plan to visit by running analytics using the crime map on the RAIDS Online website.
In case of emergency when off campus, seek immediate care or support through 911.
If you need to contact anyone from the University for emergency reasons after regular work hours, please call campus police:

Your cell phone is an important safety device: Add the University police phone numbers to your cell phone, and always carry your cell phone with you. Remember that campus police care about your safety even when you are not on campus. If you are experiencing a non-life-threatening emergency when you are off campus, you can still call campus police's non-emergency number. Of course, in a true emergency off campus, you should always call 911 first. If you do this, tell the dispatcher that you are a UR student.
