Linking Through Language and Technology

Due to COVID-19 and current Physical Distancing guidelines, Linking Through Language and Technology (LTLT) will not be operating at the start of the 2020-21 academic year.

Founded in 2005, Linking Through Language and Technology (LTLT) is an on-campus and student run issue coalition supported by the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement. The program provides English as a second language tutoring and computer competency training to University of Richmond staff members who are immigrants and refugees. LTLT aims to provide sustainable resources that support the individual goals of each participant. In addition to building language and tutoring skills, the program offers a space for cultural exchange and relationship building between UR students and staff members that might not happen within their normal work or study routines.

Tutoring Session Structure

Tutoring sessions are largely driven by the staff member's goals or objectives for the semester given that staff are on different levels of language and computer competency.

Example activities include but are not limited to:

  • Use of workbooks to learn and practice grammar
  • Taking a walk through campus and identifying objects in nature
  • Using the Global Studio Mac lab for computer competency sessions where staff learn how to access the internet, university employee account, and learn to type
  • Use of youtube videos for pronunciation practice

Information for Interested Staff Participants

Tutoring is offered Monday through Friday for four hours each day. Staff members can request tutoring for as many hours as their schedule allows. Students and staff will meet weekly on the same day and hour for the entirety of the current semester. All tutoring is done on campus at a classroom in the Carole Weinstein International Center. ESL tutoring is available free of charge to all staff members but may depend on the availability of trained volunteer tutors.

Information for Interested Tutors

Volunteer tutors do not need to have foreign language experience or specific teaching skills to participate in the program as all volunteers will complete a mandatory training and orientation before he or she begins tutoring. Each volunteer is asked to dedicate at least one hour of their time a week to the program and attend the program events and meetings. In the past, LTLT volunteers have been mainly students with a few members from the greater Richmond community.
