Practice Your Skills
Tom has wanted to be a doctor for as long as he can remember. It was this interest that led him to a work-study job with Rubicon, a substance abuse treatment center in Richmond’s Highland Park neighborhood and one of the CCE's Build It partner organizations. He spends every Friday leading group therapy sessions, taking vitals, and monitoring pharmaceutical records. Now in his third year at Rubicon, he also serves as the site liaison on the Build It Action Group, where he recruits other student volunteers and looks at ways to create long-lasting community partnerships.
The experience is an excellent training ground as Tom looks ahead to medical school applications and a career as a trauma surgeon.
