Civic Fellowships
The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) supports two summer civic fellowship programs: the David D. Burhans Civic Fellowship and the Deborah L. Marsh Civic Fellowship. A selection committee chooses fellows from a pool of competitive applicants, giving consideration to the quality of the proposed internship, the benefit of the internship project to the organization and community, and the strength of the connection between the internship and the applicant's academic studies and career goals. Completed applications must be submitted online or delivered in hard copy to the CCE no later than 5 p.m., Thursday, March 15, 2012.
Both fellowships provide $4,000 for the student and $1,000 for the student's mentor on the project.
Anyone interested in learning more about the Civic Fellowship application process is invited to attend one of two information sessions from 5:30-6:30 p.m., on Jan. 12 and Feb. 1 in the Think Tank on the second floor of Tyler Haynes Commons.
David D. Burhans Civic Fellowship
The David D. Burhans Civic Fellowship program, established to honor chaplain emeritus David Burhans, provides funding for students completing otherwise-unpaid, academically grounded 10-week internships in the nonprofit or government sectors.
The number of Burhans Civic Fellows has grown from four during the program's inaugural year in 2005, to eight during 2011. Burhans Civic Fellows have completed internships locally, nationally, and internationally in issue areas ranging from the arts, to education, to the environment, to immigration, to victims' rights, to disaster relief, to community development, and others.

Deborah L. Marsh Civic Fellowship
The Deborah L. Marsh Civic Fellowship program, inaugurated in summer 2009, was created to honor the memory of community-service advocate and Meals on Wheels president Deborah L. Marsh. It supports an otherwise unpaid, academically grounded 10-week internship for one student each summer at a nonprofit organization in Greater Richmond.
